Issue: Unwanted Servers

There are many environments where the DW Spectrum Client desktop software is needed to view what the DW Spectrum Server is doing. In these situations, it is recommended that the desktop client is installed on separate workstations for regular viewing.

There are sometimes scenarios where a user is unsure of what component of the DW Spectrum IPVMS platform is needed for their machine and will install the Bundle/Full version of the software under the assumption that it will provide a quick solution. However, what they do not know is that the bundled version includes both the DW Spectrum Client and Server software components, so the user is essentially creating a whole new DW Spectrum System.  This can create issues such as:

  • Activating licenses to the wrong server
  • Recording to the wrong server
  • Unwanted traffic/traffic related issues
  • "Server Conflict" errors reported

Resolution: Replace the Bundle

When the user launches the DW Spectrum Client on their workstation, they will typically see:

  • An additional Server is detected and awaiting setup.
  • A new, unwanted Server has been set up and the user is now accidentally logged into the wrong Server.

To correct the mistake of creating an unwanted Server, identify the workstation on which the bundle has been installed. If you do not know which computer is hosting the unwanted Server, determine the IP address of the Server that the Client has detected.

For example, if the Server is identified as “localhost” or “127.0.0.1”, then the current computer that the Client is running on is hosting the bundle.

If the Client is seeing a different local IP address (192.168.1.x, 10.1.10.x, 10.0.0.x, 172.16.0.x, etc.), then it is on another computer somewhere on the local network.

Once the bundle location has been identified, uninstall the bundled version of the software, and proceed with installing only the DW Spectrum Client component. For more information on how to perform this action, you can refer to DW Spectrum – Bundle Replacement Procedure.
