Setting Up iDRAC Network IP for DW Blackjack RACK

-----------------------------------

Affected Roles:  Owner, Administrator

Last Edit:  May 10, 2023

-----------------------------------

Configuring iDRAC

The Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller (iDRAC) can be used to alert administrators to system issues, perform remote system management and mitigate the need for physical access to the system. If an issue must be troubleshot beyond that which is available through DW Support, a Technical Support Report (TSR) and access through the iDRAC may be needed to assist the Dell Support team. For this to be possible, the iDRAC will need to be set up.

This article will outline the iDRAC IP settings needed to allow remote support from the Dell Support Team.

Supported/Affected Devices:

  • DW Blackjack RACK Server Series
    • DW-BJRR2UxxT, DW-BJRR2UxxTLX, DW-BJRR2UxxTS
    • DW-BJRR2PxxT, DW-BJRR2PxxTLX, DW-BJRR2PxxTS
    • DW-BJRR2XxxT, DW-BJRR2XxxTLX, DW-BJRR2XxxTS

Configuring iDRAC Using iDRAC Setting Utility

To configure the iDRAC with the iDRAC Setting Utility:

  1. Upon powering ON the system, press the F2 key during the Power-on Self-test (POST) process to open the System Setup menu.

  1. In the System Setup Main Menu, click on “iDRAC Settings” then select “Network”.

  1. In the iDRAC Network Settings, configure the following:
    • Enable NIC:  Select “Enabled” to allow the iDRAC NIC.
    • NIC Selection:  Select “Dedicated” to use the dedicated network interface available on the Remote Access Controller. This interface is not shared with the host operating system.
    • Failover Network:  Disabled when using the “Dedicated” option.
    • Auto Negotiation: Select “On” to have the iDRAC automatically set the duplex mode and network speed.

  1. [Optional] If the network infrastructure has a DNS server, register iDRAC on the DNS. If a DNS server is not deployed, skip this step and continue to Step 5.

These are the initial setting requirements for advanced features such as Directory services – Active Directory or LDAP, Single Sign On and smart card.

To register iDRAC:

    • Enable “Register DRAC on DNS”.
    • Enter the DNS DRAC Name.
    • Select “Auto Config Domain Name” to automatically acquire a domain name from DHCP. Otherwise, provide the DNS Domain Name.

  1. Configure the following IPv4 settings:
  • Enable IPv4:  Select “Enabled” to activate IPv4 network configuration.
  • Enable DHCP:  Select “Enabled” to automatically assign an IP address, gateway, and subnet mask to the iDRAC via DHCP device (router, etc.). To manually set static settings, select “Disabled”.

  1. [Optional] Depending on the local network settings, if you are using IPv6, configure the following. Otherwise, skip to the next step, Step 7.
    • Enable IPv6:  Select “Enabled” to activate IPv6 addressing.
    • Enable Auto Configuration:  Select “Enabled” to automatically assign the IP address, gateway, and subnet mask to iDrac from the DHCPv6 server. To manually set static settings, select “Disabled”.
  2. Click “Back” then click “Finish” and save the network settings.

  1. The system will reboot after saving the settings. Once the system has finished restarting, the iDRAC Web User Interface can then be reached using any supported web browser (Chrome, Firefox, etc.). Use the IPv4 or IPv6 IP address (depending on the settings from Step 5 or Step 6) to connect.

The default password for iDRAC login is:

  • Username:  root
  • Password:  calvin

Otherwise, you can locate the secure password on the back of the information Service Tag under “iDRAC Default Password”.
