Integrating SiteWatch Motion Detector with Milestone XProtect

SiteWatch Alarm Integration

The SiteWatch IP-enabled outdoor motion detector can be integrated with most major home automation platforms and video management systems (VMS).

When the motion sensor is triggered, a network call is sent to the VMS server to where an event rule can then be activated. This can vary from prompting the server to begin recording video from security cameras that are related to the sensor or to notify personnel about the detection.

This article will outline how to set up a SiteWatch Motion Detector to trigger an event in the Milestone XProtect VMS.

Supported/Affected Devices:

  • DW SiteWatch Motion Detector
    • DW-DTMWIPW (PIR and microwave detection)
    • DW-DTPIRIPW (Quad-element PIR sensor)

Performing the Integration

When integrating the SiteWatch Motion Detector with Milestone XProtect, the administrator will need to create a generic event and alarm configurations within Milestone XProtect, as well as designate the Milestone XProtect Server for SiteWatch. This process will be outlined in the sections below.

Part 1:  Create Milestone XProtect Generic Events

To configure Milestone XProtect generic events:

  1. In the Milestone XProtect Management application, select the Events and Output from the Advanced Configuration settings list from the left-side panel.
  2. Open the General Event settings and set the Alert and Generic Event Port number value.

Set the Polling Interval to determine the time for Milestone XProtect to react after the notification from the SiteWatch detector has been received. Set to 1/10 seconds (0.1 sec.) for the fastest reaction time.

  1. Expand the Events and Output settings list in the left-side panel, right-click on “Generic Events” and select “Properties” from the context menu.

A new window will then display.

  1. Click the Add button at the bottom of the the pop-up and configure the following:
    • Event Name – enter a descriptive name for the event trigger. For example, “Zone 1 Trigger”.
    • Event Substring – enter a unique sub-string for the event then click the Add button that appears beside the Event Substring field. The sub-string must be unique for each event created and should also describe the function. For example, “Zone 1 Start”.
    • Event Priority – Set the event priority for the event (1~3).

When finished, click the OK button.

Repeat this step and create a Stop Event for the zone. For example, “Zone 1 Trigger Stop”.

Each zone must have a ‘start’ event and a ‘stop’ event in Milestone XProtect.

Part 2: Create Milestone XProtect Alarms

To configure Milestone XProtect Alarms:

  1. In the left-side panel, expand the Alarms settings list, then right-click on “Alarm Definitions” and select “Create New” from the context menu.

A new window will then display.

  1. In the Alarm Definition window, enable the Alarm definition settings and configure the following:
    • Name – enter an alarm name. For example, “SiteWatch Detector Trigger”
    • Description – enter a brief description about the alarm event. For example, “SiteWatch Detector Trigger. See cameras and respond.”
    • Triggering Event – set the Triggering Event to “System Event” and the event type as “External Event”.
    • Sourcessee next step (#3) below.
    • Activation Period – select “Time profile” and set it to “Always”.
    • Related Cameras – in the Other section, select the camera that is related to the motion detector’s location.

  1. For Trigger, click the Select button that appears beside the Triggering event field.

The Select Sources window will display. Select the generic events for the ‘start’ and ‘stop’ zone triggers that were created in Part 1 above.

Click the OK button to confirm and close the Select Sources window.

  1. Click the OK button to confirm and close the Alarm Definition window once finished.

Part 3: SiteWatch Motion Detector Action Setup

To configure SiteWatch Actions:

  1. In the SiteWatch detector’s user interface, open the Events menu and select “Events Enabled” radio button.

Click the Add Action button and select “Milestone VMS” from the drop-down menu. A pop-up window will display.

  1. While editing the action, configure the following:
    • Action Type – select “Milestone VMS”.
    • Milestone Server IP – enter the IP address of the Milestone XProtect Server.
    • Generic Event Port – enter the event port for the server (Part 1).
    • Start Event Substring – enter the unique sub-string for the start event that was created in Part 1 with Milestone XProtect.
    • Stop Event Substring – enter the unique sub-string for the sstop event that was created in Part 1 with Milestone XProtect.

When finished, click “Save Action”.

**NOTE:  The “Start event substring and “Stop event substring” settings must match the unique sub-string name that was set in Part 1.

  1. When the SiteWatch Motion Detector detects movement, it will now send a notice to the Milestone XProtect Server.

You can check the logs within Milestone XProtect Smart Client to confirm that the event triggers and alarms are working properly.
