Motion Detection

DW Spectrum® utilizes its own motion detection engine, allowing users to configure motion zones without the need of accessing every camera's interface directly.  DW Spectrum will use the secondary stream by default.  When motion is detected, it will trigger the recording of the primary stream, keeping server resources optimized while still providing the high resolution recording you expect.  Even if continuous recording is used, Spectrum will still collect motion meta data for the purposes of events and the smart search function.

 

This article will outline how to troubleshoot motion detection causing recording issues for DW Spectrum®.

 

 

Checking DW Spectrum® IPVMS

When encountering motion detection issues for a camera in DW Spectrum® Client:

  1. Log in to DW Spectrum® as the Administrator or as a user with administrator privileges.
  • Default ID:  admin
  • Default Password:  admin12345

 

  1. Right-click on your camera, then select Camera Settings.

 

  1. Check the Motion Detection Settings.

Select the Motion tab.

Confirm that the Motion Detection toggle is enabled.  The secondary stream should be used.

If there is no secondary stream available, Spectrum can still detect motion with the primary stream.  However, it uses more resources and will alert you when this is enabled.  The use of a primary stream for recording is not recommended if possible.


4. By default, the Motion Detection area is set to a value of 5.  When motion is detected, red boxes will appear indicating where motion is being triggered.  No boxes indicates motion is not being detected.

If DW Spectrum® does not detect motion, select 6-9 and map it to the motion area by left-clicking and dragging the desired area.  Single clicking will fill the entire specified area.

If unwanted motion is being detected, you can select 0 to mask out motion detection entirely, or 1-4 to decrease the sensitivity of motion detection.

Click the Apply button to save the changes.

 

5. Select the Advanced tab.

DW Spectrum® provides motion detection for cameras with a secondary stream resolution less than 1024 x 768.  The DW Spectrum® Media Server will try to configure streams according to this requirement or to use existing preconfigured profiles.

Select the Secondary stream from the left panel and confirm that the Resolution is set to 1024 x 768 or less.

 

ONVIF Profile

Some camera models may report their stream information incorrectly to Spectrum.  If you find that the primary and secondary streams seem to be swapped, or the secondary stream is not functional at all, consider checking Camera Settings > Expert > ONVIF Settings

You can manually change the profile to any pre-existing profile available on the camera.

RTSP

If using an RTSP stream, it is recommended to use both the primary and secondary streams of a camera (if available).  To add a secondary stream, refer to the RTSP section of this KB Article.  Note that any adjustments to the stream would need to be done on the camera web page directly.
