DRI Industry Standard
DRI (Detection, Recognition, Identification) is an industry standard that specifies the level of detail, measured in PPM (Pixels Per Meter), that a surveillance camera must provide to perform detection, observation, recognition, and identification effectively. The greater the PPM rating, the greater the clarity and detail of subjects that are observed by the camera.
This article will outline the DRI standards and PPM requirements that are implemented for DW MEGApix Ai Cameras.

DRI Definitions
PPM (Pixel Per Meter) requirements for DRI are defined by four functions:
- Detection (25ppm) – rated at 25ppm, at the detection distance, an operator will be able to determine the presence of a human or vehicle. Although a few details will be visible, the image is often fuzzy and illegible.
- Observation (62ppm) – rated at 62ppm, at the observation distance, some characteristic details, such as distinctive clothing, can begin to be seen.
- Recognition (125ppm) – rated at 125ppm, at the recognition distance, the increased level of details allows a high degree of certainty whether a vehicle or individual is someone you know. License plates become legible under good conditions.
- Identification (250ppm) – rated at 250ppm, at identification distance, the ability to positively identify a person or vehicle, beyond reasonable doubt is easy. This level of detail provides sufficient image quality to identify an individual or clearly read a license plate.
When viewed across the entire image, the corresponding ranges for DRI appear as below:
DW MEGApix Ai DRI Distances
Since the PPM values for DRI are standardized, it is possible to mathematically calculate the DRI range by knowing the resolution of the camera’s image sensor and lens specifications.

The following table represents the DRI data for camera equipped with a 2.7mm – 13.5mm motorized zoom (MFZ) lens. The standard specifies DRI in terms of PPM without differentiating between objects such as persons or vehicles.

Ai-Based Detection Range (2.7mm ~ 13.5mm)
Unlike DRI, the maximum detection range enabled by Ai analytics varies, depending on the type of object being detected. The same camera was used to generate the following results, differentiating between person and vehicle detection.
