I/O Camera Events

Event Rules can be created in DW Spectrum to record camera video upon an external device being triggered, but an I/O Module License is needed to complete the setup. However, some customers may instead opt to connect an I/O module or alarm input directly to a camera. In doing so, an Event Rule can be created to have the system react upon the camera’s input as an alternative solution, rather than needing an I/O Module License.

An example scenario for this would be if a client has requested that a camera be set up in DW Spectrum to record video only when an input switch is triggered. Otherwise, the camera is not recording video at all, and the use of camera motion detection does not interest the client.

This article will outline how to create an Event Rule in DW Spectrum to trigger device recording only after receiving an input signal from the camera.

Camera Input

The first thing that must be done to complete this setup is to connect a device that will act as an external alarm input. Most camera modules supported by DW Spectrum include an alarm input connector for such a purpose. Connect the motion sensor, contact sensor, etc. to the camera’s alarm input.

You may need to adjust the Alarm Configuration settings within the camera itself using its web interface. Set the device alarm input settings as befits the I/O device. For instructions on how to connect to and navigate your camera’s web interface with a web browser, you may refer to the camera’s user manual.

DW Spectrum Event Rule Setup

In DW Spectrum, the system will record camera video upon Motion detection only by default. However, for this example scenario, the Recording Schedule will need to be altered so that the camera does not record any video unless the camera’s I/O input is triggered.

Once the Recording Schedule has been adjusted, an Event Rule must be created to complete the setup.

  1. In the DW Spectrum Client, right-click on the camera and open the Camera Settings.
  2. Select the Recording tab and apply the “Do Not Record” schedule type to the Recording Schedule as desired. Click the OK button to apply and save the changes.

  1. To configure the Event Rule, right-click on the camera and select “Camera Rules”.

Click the Add button to create a new rule and configure the following:

  • Event
    • When: select “Input Signal on Device”.
    • At: select the camera that is connected to the I/O device or I/O supported module.
    • Input ID: select the input assigned to the camera or I/O supported module.
  • Action
    • Do: select “Device Recording”.
    • At: select the camera that is connected to the I/O device. If an I/O module has been connected separately to the system, select the desired camera that will record the video upon the rule being triggered.
    • Interval of Action: disable this setting to have the camera immediately begin to record every time that the rule is triggered.
    • Quality: set the quality of recording as desired. A minimum of 15 FPS must be used if audio is being recorded.
    • Pre-Recording: Set to
    • Post-Recording:
    • Fixed Duration: disable this setting to have the camera continue recording once the rule has been triggered.

Click the OK button to apply and save the changes.
