Unrecognized Foreign Drives

There may be some scenarios where after a storage drive has been replaced or re-seated in a RAID configuration to rebuild but will be detected as a “foreign” drive. This can pose a problem since the drive cannot begin to rebuild until it is registering as “unconfigured good”.

This article will outline how to change a storage drive from being recognized as a foreign drive to “unconfigured good” using the MegaRAID Manager application.

**NOTE:  If you are trying to rebuild the RAID 5 configuration of a DW Blackjack E-RACK or P-RACK server, you may refer to the following articles instead.

Supported/Affected Devices:

  • DW Blackjack E-RACK Series
    • DW-BJER2U|DW-BJER2U-LX
    • DW-BJER3U|DW-BJER3U-LX
    • DW-BJER4U|DW-BJER4U-LX
  • DW Blackjack P-RACK Series
    • DW-BJPR2U|DW-BJPR2U-LX

MegaRAID Manager Configuration

  1. Log into the MegaRAID manager using the server credentials.

  1. Once logged in, navigate to the Logical tab and select the RAID Controller of the server.

  1. After selecting the controller, click on “Go To” in the toolbar, then select “Controller and “Scan Foreign Configuration”.

  1. You will be prompted to import or clear the logical configuration. Since the selected drive is going to be rebuilt so that it can be integrated into the RAID array or as part of a new array, select “Clear: Remove logical configuration from all foreign drives” then click the OK button.

  1. The program should automatically adjust the drive to appear as “unconfigured good” if it has not been initialized for use. Otherwise, the drive will begin to automatically rebuild if it is integrated into an existing array.
