Recording Issues
This guide provides troubleshooting steps for situations where a VMAX IP Plus standalone NVR is not recording, has stopped recording, or is unable to play back recorded video. Follow the steps in order to identify whether the issue is related to system status, camera configuration, storage health, or recording settings.
Note: For best results, perform troubleshooting directly at the NVR using a connected monitor and USB mouse.
Supported/Affected Devices:
- VMAX® IP Plus Series
Verify the Following
- Ensure the NVR is powered on and displays correctly.
- Verify that the system date and time are accurate.
- Have the administrator password ready.
- Check that cameras show live video.
Troubleshooting
At the NVR, log in as the admin.
- Default User: admin
- Default PW: --- (blank)
- Perform a Playback test.
If playback fails or the "End of Data" message appears, check that recording is enabled for the affected channel(s).
- Right-click the Live View screen and select Menu.
- Go to Record Setup.
- Confirm that:
- The channel is enabled for recording.
- The recording schedule is correct.
- The recording mode is set as desired (Continuous, Motion, or Alarm).
- Save changes and test playback again.
If settings are correct but the video is still missing, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.
- Power-cycle the NVR.
Please ensure that you have your unit login credentials available, as you will be logged out during this procedure.
To reboot the NVR, move the mouse cursor (the arrow) to the lower portion of the screen where the Toolbar is located. Click on the power icon, then select Reboot.
Note: Alternatively, you may press the power button on the front of the unit to prompt the Exit Menu.
If necessary, to perform a “hard reboot” of your NVR, please disconnect the power cable and wait for five seconds before reconnecting the power to the VMAX IP Plus.
Once the NVR has completed rebooting, please log in as the admin and conduct another recent Playback test. If the NVR successfully plays back footage, it indicates that the NVR has resumed recording. Should the issue persist, please proceed to the next troubleshooting step.
- Verify Firmware Version
From the Live View screen, right-click with the mouse and select Menu to access the Setup Menu.
Proceed to System → Information to view the System Information screen.
Confirm the currently installed firmware version.
- If the NVR is operating on an outdated firmware version, please upgrade the device using the latest compatible firmware release.
- If the firmware is up to date, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.
Note: Before performing a firmware upgrade, ensure that the firmware file is compatible with the exact NVR model and export the current configuration settings if available.
Note: To update firmware, please read Upgrading Firmware For A VMAX IP Plus.

Review System Logs for Recording or HDD Errors.
The system log can provide additional information regarding recording failures, hard drive issues, and system exceptions.
Procedure:
-
Directly from the NVR:
- From the Live View screen, right-click and select Search.
- Navigate to System → Log.
- Select the appropriate date range and review the available system events.
-
From the Web Interface:
- Click on Setup.
- Navigate to Log → System Log.
- Select the appropriate date range and review the recorded events.
If any HDD-related errors are detected, such as "Low Speed HDD Warning," this may suggest that the drive is experiencing performance degradation, is beginning to fail, or has become corrupted. Please proceed with the subsequent troubleshooting steps (Steps 6 and 7) to check the drive's status and attempt to format the HDD. Should an error occur during the formatting process, or if the issue persists after rebooting the system, it may be necessary to replace the HDD.
- Factory Default the NVR
From the Setup Menu, select System, then select the Settings tab.
Enable the Except Network Settings checkbox to exclude the network settings of the VMAX IP Plus from the default process.
Click the Default button to Factory Default the NVR. This will reset all settings of the NVR (excluding Network settings, if the checkbox is enabled).
Once the VMAX IP Plus has completed the Factory Default, perform another Playback test. If the NVR plays back footage, then the NVR has begun to record again. If the issue persists, proceed to the next troubleshooting step.
- Check the System’s HDD Status
It is essential that the NVR can detect its internal hard drive to record and archive video footage.
From the Setup Menu, please select System, then choose the HDD tab.
Within the HDD Menu, verify the Capacity and Free Space of the hard drive.
Click the Check button to open the HDD Health Check window. Please inspect for any Bad Blocks or if the drive Temperature exceeds 65° C.
If the HDD temperature exceeds 65 °C, please shut down the VMAX IP Plus and allow sufficient time for the unit to cool. Ensure that none of the cooling vents are obstructed.
It is recommended to ensure that the unit has proper ventilation to prevent overheating.
If there are any Bad Blocks, the HDD is not detected, or if the HDD information is unavailable, please proceed to the next troubleshooting step.
- Format the HDD.
There is a potential for data corruption within the hard drive.
Note: Formatting (clearing) the hard drive will permanently delete all archived footage from the NVR. This may be a necessary procedure to resolve the unit’s recording issues. It is strongly recommended to export any footage you wish to retain prior to formatting.
To format the HDD, select the checkbox located to the left of the hard drive model. If multiple hard drives are installed, please select only one hard drive at this time.
Click the Format button. The VMAX IP Plus will prompt you to confirm the formatting action.
This process may require several minutes to complete, depending on the drive’s capacity, extent of corruption, and the system resources currently in use.
Please repeat this procedure for any additional hard drives installed in the VMAX IP Plus.
Note: A small portion of the HDD Free Space will always be reserved for archiving information for the NVR.
Please perform another Playback test to verify that the NVR is recording properly. If the issues persist after completing all the listed troubleshooting steps, please contact Digital Watchdog Technical Support for further assistance.
The VMAX IP Plus’s Model Number and Serial Number (located on the unit’s sticker, on top of the NVR), along with your contact information, will be requested during your call.
